Wrapped in Love

My next longarming challenge that I wanted to tackle was quilting a minky backing. So my daughter and I headed out to Joann, and she chose some flannel fabric. She was very excited by the rainbow fabric which glows in the dark! Since it is February, and these colors remind me of the conversation heart candy, I went with a heart theme for the pantograph: Julie Hirt's Baptist Heart Clam.

This pattern is the Baby Lattice Quilt from Amy Smart and Diary of a Quilter. I have had this pattern pinned for many years, so I am glad that I finally had a reason to make it. I did add two extra rows so it would be as big as possible, while fitting on the piece of minky I had and still leaving me enough margin to attach to the frame.

This was a 60" wide piece of minky that I had in my stash, so 52" wide was the maximum width for my quilt top. If you have a quilt that is any bigger than that, you will want to order 90" wide minky. Because of the stretchiness, I do not recommend piecing minky for a backing. It will be more difficult to get it to lie nicely on the quilting frame. If you choose minky as your backing, please choose one with a short nap. I have heard of people using the furrier type and having trouble with minky coming through the needle holes on the front.

My daughter wanted the quilt to be super warm, so she chose wool batting. After quilting, the batting gave it amazing texture. It is soft, snuggly and warm! I just wish it were a little bigger so I could steal it for myself.
